Jack Oades
Trainee Sport and Exercise Psychologist
Jack Oades is an applied practitioner working across sport, exercise and performance. He holds a Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Loughborough University, following a First-Class Honours Bachelor’s degree from the University of Exeter.
He is currently enrolled on the Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP) with the British Psychological Society, training towards HCPC registration under the supervision of Dr. Brian Hemmings, one of the most experienced practitioners in the field.
His philosophy is simple. Sport psychology is not reserved for elite athletes with large budgets. It is for anyone who wants to get more out of their performance and their life, whether that is a golfer chasing a lower handicap, a gym member rebuilding confidence, or a coach looking after a squad.

Jack has completely changed how I approach a round. The reset routine alone has saved me shots after a bad hole, and I finally feel in control of my focus rather than at the mercy of my score.

The sessions Jack delivered with our team were practical, engaging and genuinely useful. Our staff left with tools they could apply on the gym floor straight away.

What stood out was how human it felt. There was no jargon and no judgement, just clear thinking and techniques that made sense for the level I actually play at.

I came in wanting more consistency and left with a better relationship with training as a whole. My motivation has never been steadier.

As a coach, the workshop gave me language to talk about pressure with my squad. The players responded to it immediately.

Jack helped me understand my frustration instead of just trying to bury it. That shift made a real difference to my behaviour on the course.

Ask JackI hold a Master's degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Loughborough University and a First-Class Honours Bachelor's degree from the University of Exeter. I am currently enrolled on the Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP) with the British Psychological Society, which is the route towards registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. Throughout this training I practise under the supervision of Dr. Brian Hemmings, an experienced and highly respected practitioner, so every piece of work is quality assured and grounded in professional standards.
No. I have applied experience across golf, rugby, snooker, running and general gym and exercise settings, and the underlying psychology travels well between them. What changes is the context, the demands and the language we use. During our first conversation I take time to understand your sport or activity properly, so the techniques we build together fit the moments that actually matter to you rather than a generic template.
We start with an informal conversation about where you are now and what you would like to change. From there we build a plan together, usually a series of one hour sessions that combine talking things through with practical psychological skills training such as attentional control, reset routines, self-talk and goal setting. You leave each session with something to try, and we review how it went. Work can take place online, in person, or pitch-side and course-side where that is more useful. It is collaborative, confidential and paced around you.
Not at all. Plenty of the people I work with are performing well already and simply want more consistency, sharper focus under pressure, or a clearer head on competition day. Sport psychology is performance support first and foremost. If something more clinical does come up, I will always be open about the limits of my role and help you find the right person alongside the work we are doing.
Both. Most one to one sessions run online over video, which keeps things flexible around training and travel. I also work in person across the United Kingdom, including pitch-side and course-side observation where seeing you in the real environment adds something a conversation cannot. Team workshops are usually delivered in person at your training base.
There is no fixed package. Some people come for a single focused session on one specific issue, while others work with me across a full season. As a guide, most individuals notice a meaningful shift within four to six sessions, and we review progress openly as we go so you are never locked into more than is useful.
Yes. Sessions are confidential and conducted in line with British Psychological Society ethical guidelines. Nothing is shared with coaches, parents or clubs without your explicit agreement, and where a club funds the work we agree the reporting boundaries with everyone up front before we start.
Whether you are an athlete chasing consistency, a team searching for cohesion or a coach who wants better tools, the first step is a simple conversation.
